The personal improvement <\/strong>insights and productivity tips<\/strong> I\u2019m about to share with you was inspired by Stephen Pressfield\u2019s books. (War of Art and Do the Work).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s really a selfish article written to one of my closest and best friends.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He\u2019s a Professional Poker player whom I believe is making some wrong decisions.<\/p>\n

We will call him \u201cDon\u201d for purposes of this article.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll start by sharing a few quotes from Stephen Pressfield.<\/p>\n

Most of Us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands resistance.<\/p>\n

Have you ever bought a treadmill and let it gather dust? Ever quit a diet? Quit an exercise routine? Have you ever wanted to do something greater then you and for \u201cGood\u201d yet find a way to not do it? Are you a good starter and poor finisher?<\/p>\n

Resistance is that \u201cThing\u201d that kills everything good we want to do.<\/p>\n

In Other Words\u2026any act that rejects immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth, health, or integrity<\/span><\/strong>, or expressed another way, any act that derives from our higher nature instead of our lower.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My friend is repeating a cycle I believe many of you may be repeating as well.<\/p>\n

One I\u2019m very familiar with.<\/p>\n

A cycle of self \u2013 delusion.<\/p>\n

A cycle of slowly lowering our standards and accepting the bullshit stories we sell ourselves to make us feel better.<\/p>\n

Tell me if this sound familiar to you?<\/p>\n

New exciting venture arises.<\/p>\n

We eagerly and passionately set out to conquer the world and achieve our dreams through this new vehicle we\u2019ve found.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After just a short while obstacles arise, passion subdues, energy dissipates, and our momentum stops.<\/p>\n

Along comes a new \u201cShiny Object\u201d, a new promise of riches, and we are off to the races once again.<\/p>\n

Behind us is a road filled with the rusting leftovers of half ass efforts and dreams unfulfilled.<\/p>\n

Let me ask you a question?<\/p>\n

What did you do wrong?<\/p>\n

Did you exhaust all options? Did you burn the midnight oil for month\u2019s until you found the way?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll guess the answer is NO!<\/p>\n

Yet we find a way to blame others, find excuses, and move on.<\/p>\n

Where do we go next?<\/p>\n

Generally we find our way back to a familiar pattern.<\/p>\n

Something comforting.<\/p>\n

Something that will \u201cPay The Bills\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then we are off to races as soon as we find the new \u201cShiny Object\u201d.<\/p>\n

Only to repeat this cycle over and over and over again.<\/p>\n

We tire as we get older.<\/p>\n

Our dreams become much smaller<\/strong> and we accept that maybe we will never achieve anything.<\/p>\n

We begin to listen to the critics.<\/p>\n

We begin to sell ourselves and others \u201cSmaller Dreams\u201d and accept mediocrity.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u201d is your classic entrepreneur.<\/p>\n

Just like me he has a wake of failures in his past.<\/p>\n

However, I see a pattern he\u2019s beginning to make that\u2019s one I think many of you are making as well.<\/p>\n

Before I get into that let me first examine the \u201cCareer\u201d he is choosing.<\/p>\n

Poker.<\/p>\n

Let me say that I\u2019m a believer and have first hand knowledge that Poker is a game of skill.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d set Don against anyone on this planet with limited skills and he\u2019s win 80% of the time or more.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s very good at what he does.<\/p>\n

Yet\u2026.\u201dSelf Delusion\u201d is what may kill him.<\/p>\n

The challenge with Poker is that it\u2019s reliant upon YOU to make the money.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a trade for money and time.<\/p>\n

There is no leverage other then moving up the ranks to bigger games.<\/p>\n

So unless you have a Bankroll to drastically change the leverage, you have for trading your time, then you will inevitably toil in mediocrity.<\/p>\n

The challenge with playing this game is two fold.<\/p>\n

One is that when your \u201chot\u201d you seem invincible and you think this \u201cshall continue forever\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, at some point, variance and math catches up and reality sets in.<\/p>\n

The second, yet most important, factor that causes self delusion is \u201cImmediate Gratification\u201d.<\/p>\n

In Poker you know the score all the time.<\/p>\n

You are never too far from the \u201cBig Win\u201d that fools you into believing it\u2019s around the corner.<\/p>\n

The truth is unless your bankrolled substantially, and Don isn\u2019t, variance will win every single time.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t beat it.<\/p>\n

It will always win. Just the same way casino\u2019s fool you into believing you are a winner. They know that eventually the \u201cMath\u201d will catch up with you. Their job is to just keep you coming back.<\/p>\n

Armed with a bigger Bankroll, an extreme commitment to self education, and a well thought out plan my advice would be different for Don.<\/p>\n

Don is currently going through a Financial Crisis.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve talked about his pattern of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Rather then look at his self delusion, patterns, habits, and \u201ctruths\u201d he\u2019s made a fatal error in my opinion.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s lowered his standards.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s revaluated his budget, cut things, made a decision to maybe file for bankruptcy and lower his overall bills and spending.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s cut everything bare minimum to \u201cSurvive\u201d.<\/p>\n

A pattern he\u2019s probably done before unconsciously without even knowing it.<\/p>\n

So my question is this Don?<\/p>\n

When is the last time you got up at 6 in the morning and worked till midnight to \u201cMake Things Happen”?<\/p>\n

What is the last book you read to enhance your skill set outside of the convenience of Poker?<\/p>\n

Can you say you\u2019ve ever given anything a Real Chance?<\/p>\n

Have you Lead the Way?<\/p>\n

Have you worked on YOU as much your game?<\/p>\n

Have you evaluated the Psychological Wounds that playing a \u201cGame\u201d has caused?<\/p>\n

Do you want to be riding the waves of success and failure in Poker while your children are growing up?<\/p>\n

These are not easy questions to answer.<\/p>\n

Yet they are the very things we must look at to break the pattern that has destroyed our dreams.<\/p>\n

Why do I say this.<\/p>\n

Because I lived it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Wisdom\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026Not some bullshit philosophy passed on from a book or second hand from a third party.<\/p>\n

Resistance is that Silent Killer that creeps up and stops us from doing the things that matter. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

So what would I do if I were Don?<\/p>\n

I\u2019d pick one of the may opportunities I have in my life (he has opportunities in real estate, online marketing, etc.\u2026) and divide my time accordingly.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d spend 1-2 hours every single day educating myself with the tools and skills necessary to succeed.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d spend 1-2 hours every single day implementing what I\u2019ve learned that day.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d take a leadership position and make myself accountable to my closest friends and partners.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d work my fucking ass off until I succeeded. Never giving in to the silent call of the easy buck.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d change my atmosphere and get out and work.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d ask myself better questions.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d set bigger goals.<\/p>\n

AGAIN\u2026I\u2019d work long fucking hours and make shit happen.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d do all this plus more every single day by specifically scheduling my days as a professional screenwriter would write a play.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d commit to never allow Resistance to beat me again.<\/p>\n

Only then would I schedule Poker or anything else without leverage in my life.<\/p>\n

The great Henry Fonda (Actor) would throw up every single time before he went on stage until he was 74 years old.<\/p>\n

Yet he never allowed fear or any other emotion ruin his dreams.<\/p>\n

The Battle Must Go On. <\/strong><\/p>\n

As a matter of fact Resistance will, and probably already has, come into your life as you read this very article.<\/p>\n

It will rationalize, self delude, and convince you that what you are doing is the right thing.<\/p>\n

Bullshit.<\/p>\n

Quit buying the story.<\/p>\n

Quit repeating the cycle.<\/p>\n

Quit selling yourself the story.<\/p>\n

As Antony Robbins Says;<\/p>\n

“Now I am the voice.
\nI will lead not follow.
\nI will believe not doubt.
\nI will create not destroy.
\nI set new standards.
\n<\/strong>I defy the odds.
\nI step up.
\nI am a force for good.”<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ll end by asking you a few questions.<\/p>\n

Have you really given an honest effort?<\/p>\n

Does what you do have leverage? (meaning it\u2019s not reliant upon you once you\u2019ve \u201cDone The Work\u201d)<\/p>\n

Have you worked until you can\u2019t keep you eyes open more times then you can remember?<\/p>\n

Are you creating systems within your business to maximize the leverage?<\/p>\n

Are you just lowering standards rather then \u201cDoing The Work\u201d?<\/p>\n

Are you believing the bullshit stories you tell yourself to feel better about mediocrity?<\/p>\n

This post isn\u2019t just for Don.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s for YOU!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s for me!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s for all of us entrepreneurs that are repeating this vicious cycle of Self \u2013 Delusion.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s for all of us whom allow Resistance to ruin our lives and never finish anything.<\/p>\n

Now is the time to go look in the mirror at YOU!<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t look away and start asking the tough questions.<\/p>\n

The truth is YOU are the problem.<\/p>\n

Today start \u201cDoing The Work\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u201d may not like what I\u2019ve written here.<\/p>\n

You may not like it either.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m Don\u2019s friend. I\u2019m not a dog or a Plant.<\/p>\n

Friends should be there to tell the truth.<\/p>\n

Not the fun fuzzy feeling shit we want to hear but Truth.<\/p>\n

Let me also say that I\u2019m sure someday I\u2019ll be writing about how my friend \u201cDon\u201d become one of the greatest Poker Players to have ever lived.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s that good.<\/p>\n

But time and place requires a different approach at this point in his life and probably yours.<\/p>\n

Quit chasing the \u201cShiny Objects\u201d.<\/p>\n

Find something that will give you leverage and see it through to the end.<\/p>\n

Do The Work!<\/p>\n

There is no other way.<\/p>\n

Today I feel like shit, I miss my daughter, I miss home, Resistance is SCREAMING at me to quit, to take the easy road, to take a nap\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026But I\u2019m going to choose to Do the Work!<\/p>\n

My day is planned from now until 11:30 tonight. I\u2019ll make it happen.<\/p>\n

Stack today on top of another then another and I promise I\u2019ll get where I want to go.<\/p>\n

If I give in to the call of the \u201cNew Shiny Object\u201d or \u201cEasy Road\u201d or \u201cThe Big Win\u201d I\u2019m Fucked!<\/p>\n

You too.<\/p>\n
